UNC Table Stakes participant wins industry innovation award

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, a Cohort 2 member of the UNC-Knight Foundation Table Stakes Newsroom Initiative, recently won top honors at the Key Executives Mega-Conference in Ft. Worth, Texas.

The Democrat-Gazette won the Mega-Innovation Award for an iPad initiative the newspaper refined through its participation in the UNC-Knight Table Stakes program, currently in its third cohort at the Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media within the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

The iPad initiative, part of the newspaper’s ongoing digital transformation, provides subscribers with iPads so they can read a digital replica of the newspaper online.

The Sumter Item, a member of the current UNC-Knight Table Stakes cohort, placed as a finalist for the award. The South Carolina newspaper was recognized for adding a video department, creating community events and rebuilding its print and digital products.
