Penny Abernathy to speak at UNC library exhibit celebrating local news

UNC Knight Chair in Journalism and Digital Media Economics Penny Abernathy will give a talk celebrating the opening of the exhibition “Papers for the People: A Treasury of North Carolina News Sources” at UNC’s Wilson Special Collections Library, on Feb. 27, 2020.

The opening event lasts from 5 – 6:30 p.m.

Abernathy will speak about her groundbreaking local news research at the launch of the exhibit, which contains a selection of 45 local North Carolina newspapers — some defunct and some still operating — representing specialty interests and communities ranging from a prison newspaper produced by North Carolina inmates in the 20th century to handwritten community newspapers from the 1800s.

“These newspapers not only formed and connected communities but also empowered them,” said Linda Jacobson, keeper of Wilson Library’s North Carolina Collection Gallery.

The event is co-sponsored with the Park Library.
