Kristen Hare of Poynter references the U.S. news deserts research of Knight Chair in Journalism and Digital Media Economics Penny Abernathy in this article about the North Carolina News Collaborative (NCNC.)

Composed of twenty-two North Carolina newspapers, the collaborative formed to: share content, share resources and target rural news deserts. Four of the collaborative’s newspapers — the Asheville Citizen-Times, the News & Record, the Winston Salem-Journal and the Wilmington Star-News — are former or current participants of the UNC-Knight Foundation Table Stakes Newsroom Initiative, now in its third cohort at the Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media.

The UNC Table Stakes initiative helps advance media organizations through digital transformation and development of sustainable business models.
