Celebrating Latinx journalists during Latinx Heritage Month

For Latinx Heritage Month, UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media highlighted the university’s chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. The goal of the organization is to empower Latinx journalists throughout the country.

The program is advised by Associate Professor Paul Cuadros, who also co-founded the Carolina Latinx Center. He expresses the importance of being able to have Latinx role models in the industry. Heidi Pérez-Moreno, a senior at UNC and chapter president, says her goals for this academic year are to provide career development and networking opportunities for members.

Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media Director Erica Beshears Perel emphasized the importance of Latinx journalists and their multifaceted services to the industry.

Meanwhile, CISLM is in the process of conducting an audit of newsroom diversity in North Carolina. Perel said that coverage improves when newsrooms are representative of the communities they are serving.
