Penny Abernathy appears on PBS NewsHour

Knight Chair in Journalism and Digital Media Economics Penny Abernathy was a guest on PBS NewsHour Jan. 31. She joined host Judy Woodruff and fellow guest Steve Cavendish, editor of the Nashville Banner, to talk about the dangers news deserts pose for society.

“Some essential information that we need as citizens and residents to make wise decisions we don’t have access to anymore,” Abernathy said during the interview.

The interview comes in the wake of a brutal month for journalism in which BuzzFeed laid off 15 percent of its staff, Huffington Post and Yahoo News cut hundreds of jobs and hedge-fund-backed media group MNG Enterprises Inc. made a bid for Gannett.
