Our location at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill puts us in a key location to collaborate with a variety of media organizations, nonprofits and higher education institutions across the state and the country. We frequently engage with local newspapers, radio stations, television stations and digital startups to understand how we can help them develop new digital products and create sustainable business strategies. They inform us on the cultural and political landscapes in their communities, which informs the research of our faculty in supporting our mission.
UNC Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative
The UNC Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative is a gathering of eight to 12 media organizations who meet at UNC-Chapel Hill every few months over the span of one year to share their findings and efforts in improving their products and business strategy.
Launched with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in 2015, the Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative helps advance digital transformation at local news organizations across the country. The Lenfest Institute for Journalism partnered with Knight Foundation to expand the project in February 2017 with a $4.8 million investment.
