Our location at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill affords us vast media resources in the local community and the state. We frequently engage with local newspapers, radio stations, television stations and digital startups to understand how we can help them develop new digital products. They inform us on changes in their communities, which informs the research of our faculty and students.
The Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative is a gathering of eight local media outlets who meet at UNC-Chapel Hill every few months to share their findings and efforts in their communities. Those organizations include The Daily Dispatch of Henderson; The News Reporter of Whiteville; The Pilot of Moore County; Scalawag magazine of Durham; Star News of Wilmington; UNC-TV of Research Triangle Park; WFAE of Charlotte; and WTVD-ABC11 of the Raleigh-Durham area.
Launched with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in 2015, the Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative helps advance digital transformation at local news organizations across the country. The Lenfest Institute for Journalism partnered with Knight Foundation to expand the project in February 2017.
Their first meeting was in May 2017. They will conclude in Spring 2018.
