‘A recipe for burnout’: CISLM’s Elizabeth Thompson on journalism working conditions

The Daily Tar Heel the complex reality surrounding journalists and their struggle with burnout. Based on the findings from the Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media at UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media, 70% of local journalists had experienced work-related burnout, with higher numbers found among women and younger journalists.

Elizabeth Thompson, CISLM local news researcher, said that the center is working on a follow-up survey, Stayers and Leavers.

“We’re hoping that this could also be a tool for newsroom leaders,” Thompson said.
